In many communities across Somalia, families with children who have speech delay often face misunderstanding, fear, and stigma. Some people wrongly believe that a child who is not speaking has been cursed, punished, or affected by something shameful. These beliefs can deeply hurt parents—especially mothers—who are already carrying worry and emotional stress for their child.

At Dhoodan, we want every family to know one important message:

Speech delay is not a curse, and no mother should ever feel ashamed or alone.

Speech delay affects many children around the world. Every child develops differently. Some children may speak later than others, while some may need additional support, therapy, or early intervention to strengthen their communication skills. With understanding, patience, and proper support, many children make significant progress.

Unfortunately, awareness about speech delay is still very limited in many parts of Somalia. Because of this, families are often left confused and unsupported. Mothers may be unfairly blamed, isolated, or overwhelmed by fear and judgment from society instead of receiving compassion and guidance.

This is why Dhoodan was created.

Dhoodan is a Somali organization dedicated to raising awareness about speech delay and supporting children and families living with communication challenges. Our goal is to educate communities, encourage early understanding, and provide hope to parents who may feel alone in this journey.

We believe:

• Every child deserves understanding, care, and opportunity.

• Every mother deserves support instead of blame.

• Awareness can change lives.

• Early help and encouragement can make a meaningful difference.

At Dhoodan, we are working to replace harmful myths with education, kindness, and hope. We want families to know that having a child with speech delay does not define failure, shame, or hopelessness. It simply means the child may need more support, patience, and understanding.

This is only the beginning of our mission. Together, we can build a more compassionate and informed society for children with speech delay and their families.

Dhoodan — Giving children a voice, and families hope.
